Steps to distance

Step count alone does not tell you how far you walked — that depends on stride length. Distance ≈ (steps × stride) ÷ 12 for feet, then ÷ 5,280 for miles. Shorter people and slower walkers typically take more steps per mile.

A rough default is about 2,000 steps per mile (30 in / 76 cm stride). Taller walkers or brisk pace may be closer to 1,700 steps/mile; shorter strides may exceed 2,300. Measure a known distance and count steps for a personal average.

Example: 10,000 steps at a 30-inch stride → about 4.73 miles (7.6 km). The same steps at a 26-inch stride → about 4.10 miles — stride input matters for accuracy.

Common questions

How do I estimate stride length?

Walk 20 steps on a measured track, divide distance by 20, or use height-based rules (~41% of height for women, ~43% for men). Fitness trackers often calibrate automatically.

Do running steps count the same?

Running strides are longer — use a longer stride setting or a separate run distance tracker for accurate mileage.

Is this the same as my phone health app?

Apps use motion sensors and their own stride estimates. Enter your stride here to match a manual pedometer or a measured calibration.
