This calculator applies a common weight-based guideline of approximately 35 milliliters per kilogram of body weight per day, then adds extra fluid for exercise minutes entered. The result is a starting estimate for healthy adults — not a rigid prescription that applies equally in desert heat, office air conditioning, or during illness.

The eight-glasses-a-day rule oversimplifies hydration because glass size, other beverages, and water from food all vary. Soups, fruits, vegetables, coffee, and tea contribute to total fluid intake even though plain water is the healthiest default for calories and dental health. NIH and CDC guidance emphasizes thirst and urine color — pale yellow — as practical personal signals alongside general intake targets rather than forcing a fixed volume regardless of context.

Exercise increases sweat losses that depend on intensity, duration, ambient temperature, humidity, and clothing. The activity adjustment here adds a flat increment per minute of daily exercise — a rough proxy rather than a sweat-rate calculation. Endurance athletes in hot weather may need substantially more; a 60-minute summer run can exceed the daily adjustment this field provides. Weighing yourself before and after long sessions helps estimate actual sweat loss.

Special populations need clinician guidance, not calculator defaults. Pregnancy and breastfeeding increase fluid needs beyond what this tool shows. Kidney disease, heart failure, and certain medications require fluid limits or monitoring that override general formulas. Older adults may have a blunted thirst response and need intentional hydration even when not thirsty — discuss safe targets with a geriatrician or primary care provider.

Remember that food moisture counts toward hydration status even though this estimate focuses on drinkable fluid equivalents.

Signs of inadequate hydration include dark urine, headache, dizziness, and reduced exercise performance — but these symptoms also have other causes. Overhydration with plain water without adequate electrolytes can rarely lead to hyponatremia during prolonged endurance events. Balance intake with sweat loss, salt intake from meals, and medical advice rather than chasing an arbitrary daily number. Infants, children, and older adults hydrate differently — pediatric and geriatric targets require clinician input.

Worked example with defaults: 70 kg body weight and 30 minutes of daily exercise. Baseline is approximately 70 times 35, or 2,450 ml, plus an exercise adjustment, totaling roughly 2.6 to 2.8 L depending on the activity increment — about 11 US cups or 88 fl oz. A sedentary 70 kg person without the exercise bump needs less. At 154 lb imperial input, the same math applies after conversion.

Does coffee and tea count toward hydration?

How much extra do I need when exercising?

For long or hot sessions, weigh yourself before and after training — each pound lost roughly suggests about 16 oz of fluid replacement, plus ongoing baseline needs throughout the day.

Can I drink too much water?

Rare but serious overhydration (hyponatremia) can occur with excessive plain water intake, especially during endurance events when sodium losses are high. Follow thirst, urine color, and medical guidance rather than forcing very high volumes.
