Running pace math
Running pace is time divided by distance — typically minutes per kilometer or per mile. Finish time equals pace × distance. If you know how long you ran and how far, pace = time ÷ distance.
Race pacing strategies often target even splits — the same pace each kilometer — though hills, weather, and fitness cause variation. Negative splits (second half faster) are common in well-executed races.
Example: 5 km in 25 minutes → 5:00/km pace (about 8:03/mile). A 4:30/km pace for 10 km predicts a 45-minute finish.
Common questions
Pace per mile vs per km?
Multiply or divide by 1.609 to convert between min/km and min/mile. This calculator shows both in results when using metric inputs.
Does this account for elevation?
No. Hills slow effective pace — compare efforts on similar courses or use heart rate or perceived exertion on hilly routes.
