When does Ramadan start?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. Its start follows 1 Ramadan, and Eid al-Fitr follows 1 Shawwal — the day after the last fasting day. Because the Hijri year is lunar, Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
This calculator converts Hijri month boundaries to Gregorian dates using either the Umm al-Qura calendar (common in Saudi Arabia and many national tables) or a deterministic tabular (civil) Hijri cycle. Actual start dates in your community may differ by one day depending on moon sighting announcements.
Example: in 2026, Ramadan 1447 AH is estimated to begin February 18 with Eid al-Fitr around March 20 under Umm al-Qura tables used here — always verify with your local mosque before planning travel or time off.

Common questions
Why can Ramadan differ by one day?
Many communities wait for a physical moon sighting or follow a national authority. Tabular calendars predict astronomically — local announcements can shift the start or end by one day.
Can there be two Ramadans in one Gregorian year?
Yes. Because the Hijri year is shorter than the Gregorian year, two Ramadan starts can fall within the same Gregorian year — for example around 2030.
