Printify unit economics

Printify connects your Etsy, Shopify, or WooCommerce shop to a network of print providers who fulfill orders on demand. Unlike marketplace POD platforms where the site sets buyer-facing economics, you control retail price on your own storefront. Printify charges product plus print cost per order, and your shop platform takes marketplace or payment fees on what the customer pays. Margin lives in the gap between those numbers.

Enter combined product plus print cost from your Printify catalog quote — costs vary by provider, product blank, print areas, and destination country. Printify Premium discounts catalog prices for a monthly subscription fee; update inputs if you subscribe because break-even on Premium depends on order volume. Shipping depends on product weight, zone, and whether you use Printify flat rates or live carrier rates pulled at checkout.

This calculator merges print into the base field with shipping and marketplace fee separate — matching how many sellers read Printify order confirmations. Platform fee percent applies to your selling price on Etsy, Shopify Payments, or similar. If you sell on multiple channels, run separate scenarios because fee stacks differ — Etsy transaction fees are not identical to Shopify card rates.

Customer-paid shipping versus free shipping mirrors general POD economics. If you absorb shipping to offer free delivery and win search placement, include postage in costs. If the buyer pays shipping at checkout and you pass through Printify shipping without markup, enter zero in the shipping field and keep retail price lower. Buyers compare total checkout cost when deciding between shops.

Print provider choice affects quality, speed, and reprint rates — not just quoted base price. Cheaper providers may mean longer production times or more replacements that erase margin without new revenue. Factor return and refund rates mentally; this tool assumes clean fulfilled orders. Switching providers warrants re-running the calculator with updated catalog quotes.

Premium subscription math deserves its own check. If Premium saves $1.50 per shirt and costs $29 monthly, you need roughly 20 shirts per month just to break even on the subscription before counting your time. High-volume shops benefit; hobbyists with sporadic sales may lose money on Premium unless they batch uploads and marketing pushes. Compare three providers on the same blank before locking retail — a $1 catalog difference is pure margin at identical list price.

Worked example with defaults: $12.50 product plus print plus $4.99 shipping = $17.49 hard cost. Sell at $27.99 with 6.5% marketplace fee ($1.82). Total cost ≈ $19.31. Profit ≈ $8.68 (~31% margin). Volume and ad spend determine whether that margin sustains the shop — fifty sales per month at that profit is about $434 before tax, not $1,399 gross revenue. Scale inputs to your actual catalog quote before comparing SKUs.

Tax and 1099 reporting follow IRS self-employment rules for marketplace sellers — income is generally taxable when earned, not when withdrawn. Common questions

Where do I find Printify product costs?

In the Printify catalog when you create or edit a product — base blank plus print price for your chosen provider and print areas. Costs vary by provider location, product type, and Premium subscription status. Copy numbers from a live mock order when possible rather than memory from an old listing. Re-quote after switching print provider, changing print placement, or enabling/disabling Printify Premium discounts.

Should I include Etsy or Shopify fees?

Yes — enter the marketplace or payment fee percent for the channel where you sell. Printify does not charge a per-sale marketplace commission like Redbubble; your shop platform does. Omitting Etsy or Shopify fees overstates margin by several percentage points on typical listings.

Does Printify Premium change my margin?

Premium lowers product catalog prices — re-enter lower product plus print cost if you subscribe. The monthly fee only pays off above a volume break-even where per-order savings exceed the subscription. Run both with-Premium and without-Premium quotes when deciding whether to upgrade.

Why combine product and print in one field?

Printify order confirmations often show product and print together as one fulfillment line. Split them in our general POD Profit Calculator if you prefer separate base and print inputs for provider comparison. Combined entry reduces typos when copying from dashboard to calculator.

Is this official Printify pricing?

No. We are not affiliated with Printify. Catalog costs change with provider, region, and promotions — confirm in your Printify dashboard before finalizing retail prices or ad budgets. Treat output as planning math, not a payout guarantee or official quote.
