How Etsy fees work

Etsy sellers pay stacked fees on each completed order. The listing fee is charged when you publish or renew a listing — currently $0.20 USD (or local equivalent) per listing, whether or not the item sells. On sale, Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee on the full order total: item price plus any shipping you charge the buyer. Payment processing through Etsy Payments adds another layer — US sellers typically pay 3% + $0.25 per order, while UK, AU, and CA rates differ. Offsite Ads, when attributed to the order, add 12% or 15% on top of everything else.

The transaction fee base catches many new sellers off guard. If you list a $40 item and charge $8 shipping, Etsy calculates 6.5% on $48, not $40. That is $3.12 in transaction fees alone. Raising the item price to offer “free shipping” does not reduce fees — Etsy still charges 6.5% on the higher item price. Some sellers separate shipping to show a lower item price, but the fee base follows the buyer’s total checkout amount either way.

Etsy Payments processing rates vary by seller country. US defaults in this calculator are 3% + $0.25 per order. UK sellers see 4% + £0.20; Australian sellers 3% + A$0.30; Canadian sellers 3% + CA$0.25. Currency conversion and regulatory operating fees in some regions can add small surcharges not modeled here. Offsite Ads fees apply only when Etsy attributes a sale to advertising on Google, Facebook, Pinterest, or partner sites. The rate is 12% when the order total is under $50 USD and 15% when it is $50 or more — and that percentage applies to the whole order total, not just the portion above $50. Shops that made less than $10,000 USD in the past 365 days can opt out in Shop Manager. Above that threshold, enrollment is mandatory, though the fee hits only attributed orders.

Worked example with US defaults: $40 item + $8 shipping = $48 order total. Listing $0.20 + transaction 6.5% ($3.12) + processing 3% + $0.25 ($1.69) = $5.01 in base fees — about 10.4% of the order. With $12 product cost, net profit is roughly $30.99 before Offsite Ads. If Offsite Ads apply at 12%, add $5.76 — profit drops to about $25.23. Bump the item to $55 with free shipping and the 15% Offsite Ads tier kicks in on the full checkout total.

Round-trip sanity check: divide net profit plus all fees by the order total — you should land back at 100%. If your spreadsheet shows fees as a simple percent of item price only, you will under-estimate by ignoring shipping in the transaction base and by treating processing as a flat percent without the fixed $0.25 component. Small orders feel the fixed fee: on a $15 sale, $0.25 processing is 1.7% extra on top of 3%.
