The Hijri calendar is purely lunar, with twelve months of 29 or 30 days and no intercalation, so a Hijri year runs about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian one and Islamic dates move steadily earlier through the seasons — which is why Ramadan falls at a different time of year across a lifetime. Any calculated date is necessarily an estimate, because the start of a month traditionally depends on the sighting of the new crescent. Practice differs: some communities follow local sighting, others accept a sighting elsewhere, and others use a precalculated astronomical schedule such as Umm al-Qura, so announced dates can differ by a day between countries or even between mosques in one city.
