Soul Urge Number Calculator

The soul urge number — heart's desire in some books — uses only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) in your name. Each vowel carries its Pythagorean value, the vowels are summed, and the total is reduced with master numbers preserved when they appear. Consonants are ignored entirely for this calculation, which is why soul urge often differs from expression even when you enter the same name.

Numerology texts often describe soul urge as inner motivation — what you want when no one is watching, or what feels emotionally necessary in symbolic readings. It complements expression (all letters) and personality (consonants only) to form the standard three-number name chart taught in introductory Pythagorean workbooks.

Worked example: "Anna Lee" → vowels A, A, E, E → 1+1+5+5 = 12 → 1+2 = 3. The soul urge is 3 while the expression from the same name is 7, illustrating how letter filtering changes the result. Only vowel positions matter; consonants between them do not contribute.

Y is treated as a consonant here, matching the most common Pythagorean worksheets. Some authors move Y to vowels when it carries a vowel sound — as in "Yvonne" or "Glyn" — so your printed chart may differ if the author uses that rule. Note the convention when comparing sources.

Compare full legal name versus nickname in separate runs. A daily nickname with different vowels can shift soul urge even when expression stays similar. For example, "Elizabeth" versus "Liz" sums different vowel totals because the letter sets differ.

Master numbers 11, 22, and 33 can appear from vowel subtotals. When vowels sum to 29, many traditions stop at 11 rather than reducing to 2. The calculator preserves master numbers at the same points life path and expression do.

Use soul urge as journaling prompts and symbolic reflection — not as relationship verdicts, career mandates, or clinical personality assessment. The vowel math is simple; the interpretive labels vary by author and tradition.

Walk through the default name "Anna Lee" on paper: four vowels sum to 12, then reduce to 3. Changing one vowel — "Anne Lee" with an extra E — shifts the total without touching consonants, which is why soul urge can differ sharply from personality on the same full name.

Silent vowels in spelling still count when the letter appears — the tool does not infer pronunciation. If your tradition skips silent E in French names, results may differ from handwritten charts that apply special casing rules.
