Expression (destiny) number

The expression number — also called the destiny number — comes from the full birth name written in Latin letters. Each letter maps to 1–9 in the Pythagorean chart (A=1, B=2, …, I=9, J=1 again), every letter is summed, and the total is reduced unless a master number appears.

Traditions tie this number to outward talents and how a name is "expressed" in the world. Use the name you most commonly go by on documents, or compare legal vs preferred names in separate runs. Hyphens and apostrophes are ignored; accented letters are stripped to their base A–Z form.

Example: "Anna Lee" → A(1)+N(5)+N(5)+A(1)+L(3)+E(5)+E(5) = 25 → 2+5 = 7. Double letters each count separately.

Common questions

Which name should I enter?

Use the full name on your birth certificate, or the name you use daily — run both if you want to compare. Middle names and suffixes count if you include them.

Does this support non-English names?

Uses the Pythagorean (Latin A–Z) system only. Diacritics are stripped. Chaldean numerology uses different letter values. Enter names using Latin A–Z letters; diacritics (é, ñ, ü) are converted to their base letter before counting.

Is this the same as Chaldean numerology?

No. Chaldean systems use different letter-to-number mappings and often treat 9 differently. This calculator uses Pythagorean values only.
