Dimensional weight is where small sellers most often lose margin. Carriers bill on whichever is greater, actual scale weight or a volumetric figure derived from the box dimensions and a divisor set by the carrier and service level. A light but bulky item — pillows, lampshades, anything in an oversized box — is charged as though it were far heavier, so trimming a couple of inches from a carton can cut the bill more than removing weight. Measure the outer packaging including any bulge, since carriers measure the box as presented, and round up the way they do. Landed cost estimates depend on the commodity code and origin you assume for duty, and customs may classify goods differently, so treat the total as a planning figure and confirm the current divisor and surcharges with your carrier before quoting a customer.
