Metric volumetric weight
Volumetric (chargeable) weight is the metric, international equivalent of US dimensional weight. Dimensions are entered in centimeters and divided by a standard divisor to produce a weight in kilograms, then rounded up — the same principle carriers use to bill bulky, lightweight parcels fairly relative to the space they occupy.
The IATA air freight standard uses a divisor of 5,000 (cm³ per kg), widely used by international couriers like DHL and postal air services. Some ground/sea freight forwarders use different divisors (commonly 4,000 or 6,000) — always confirm the divisor with your specific carrier or freight forwarder before quoting.
Example: a parcel measuring 50 × 40 × 30 cm has a volume of 60,000 cm³. Divided by the standard 5,000 divisor, that is 12 kg of volumetric weight — the carrier bills whichever is greater between this and the parcel's actual scale weight.
The divisor encodes an assumed density, which makes the different figures easy to interpret. A divisor of 5,000 cm³/kg is the same as assuming 200 kg per cubic metre, while 6,000 assumes about 167 kg/m³ and 4,000 assumes 250 kg/m³. Anything less dense than the assumed figure gets billed on volume rather than mass.
Which divisor applies depends on mode and contract, not just carrier. IATA's air standard is 6,000 cm³/kg, but most integrators apply 5,000 to express parcels, and sea and road forwarders commonly quote 4,000 or 6,000 depending on lane. The number printed on your quote overrides any general rule, so enter that.
Rounding happens twice on many international tariffs and both steps cost money. Dimensions are often rounded up to the nearest whole centimetre before the volume is computed, and the resulting chargeable weight is then rounded up to the next 0.5 or 1 kg. A parcel measured at 50.2 cm can therefore be billed as 51 cm.
For air freight consolidations the comparison is made across the whole shipment rather than per box, so a dense carton can offset a light one within the same consignment. Parcel services almost always assess each piece individually, which is why splitting one shipment into several small boxes can raise the total chargeable weight.
Reducing a single dimension is the most effective lever, because volume is a product of three numbers. Trimming 5 cm from the longest side of a 50 × 40 × 30 cm parcel removes 6,000 cm³ — a full 1.2 kg of chargeable weight at a 5,000 divisor — which usually beats renegotiating the rate per kilogram.
Session fees, remote area surcharges, and fuel are excluded — this is volume math only.
