Ring sizing systems

Ring sizes are not universal. The US and Canada use a numeric scale based on inner diameter, usually in half steps. The UK and Australia use letter codes from F through Z and beyond. EU labels track inner circumference in millimetres, so EU 54 means about 54 mm around the inside of the band. Charts map the closest standard size across systems, but manufacturing tolerances mean “close” is not always exact.

The most reliable input is a physical measurement: a ring that already fits, a plastic sizer from a jeweller, or a strip of paper wrapped snugly around the finger, marked at the overlap and measured in millimetres. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so measure at normal room temperature after ordinary activity rather than straight after exercise or a winter walk.

Example: US 7 is roughly UK N, EU 54, and about 17.3 mm inner diameter. Circumference and diameter are related by π, so divide a circumference in millimetres by 3.14159 to estimate diameter — 54 mm around the inside works out to about 17.2 mm across.

US sizes step by a fixed amount rather than arbitrary numbers: each whole size adds about 0.032 inches (0.81 mm) of inner diameter, which is roughly 2.6 mm of circumference per full size and 1.3 mm per half size. A half size is therefore a real, feelable difference, and measuring a paper strip to the nearest millimetre is precise enough to land on the right one.

Band width changes the fit at the same nominal size. Wide bands press against more of the finger and feel tighter, while comfort-fit profiles with a rounded interior slide on more easily — many people go up half a US size for a wedding band 6 mm or wider.

If a finger falls between two sizes, jewellers usually size up rather than down: a ring that will not pass the knuckle cannot be worn at all, whereas a slightly loose band can be tightened with sizing beads. Rings set with stones all the way round, or already engraved, are the exception — have those measured professionally, because resizing them is difficult or impossible.

Common mistakes are measuring the knuckle instead of where the ring will sit, sizing the wrong hand (dominant-hand fingers often run about half a size larger), and ordering an EU number as though it were a US size — EU 54 is not US 54.

Stackable rings and midi rings worn above the knuckle fit differently from a band at the base of the finger, so measure each position separately rather than reusing one number across the hand.

Jewellers size with a steel mandrel and a set of test rings, which is tighter than any home method. A paper strip typically gets within a quarter to a half size — good enough to order a plain band, but worth confirming in person before a custom or engraved piece.

Limits: this is a chart lookup. It cannot account for tapered bands, eternity settings that cannot be resized, or the quarter-size swing many people see between summer and winter. Check the seller's return and resizing policy before committing to engraving.

Common questions

How do I measure my ring size at home?

Wrap a strip of paper around the finger, mark the overlap, measure the length in mm — that is circumference. Match to the closest EU size in this chart.

What if I am between sizes?

Round up for wide bands; round down for narrow stacks. A jeweler can size more precisely than a paper strip.

Does EU size mean diameter or circumference?

In this tool, EU is inner circumference in millimeters — the common labeling convention in continental Europe. Divide by π (3.14159) if you need inner diameter instead.

Do wider bands need a larger size?

Often yes — more metal contact against the finger feels tighter. Many people add half a US size for bands 6 mm wide or more, unless the band has a rounded comfort-fit interior.
