One-rep max estimates
A one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for one full repetition with proper form on a given exercise. Testing a true 1RM is fatiguing and carries injury risk on heavy compound lifts like squats and bench press — especially without spotters or a power rack with safety pins. Strength coaches often estimate 1RM from submaximal sets instead, such as a hard set of five reps stopped one or two reps shy of failure.
This calculator uses the Epley formula: estimated 1RM approximately equals weight multiplied by one plus reps divided by 30. It also displays the Brzycki formula (weight times 36 divided by 37 minus reps) for comparison. Both are regression estimates from gym data — neither is exact for every lifter or lift. Multi-joint barbell lifts like squats and deadlifts tend to estimate more reliably than isolation machines where skill and leverage differ.
Accuracy drops as rep count rises. Sets of one to five reps produce the tightest estimates; sets above ten reps underestimate true max because muscular endurance and fatigue patterns diverge from the models. If your set was to absolute failure versus leaving two reps in reserve, the estimate shifts — enter the hardest set you actually completed with good form, not a warm-up or backoff set.
Use estimated 1RM to program training percentages. Classic strength work often prescribes 85% to 95% of 1RM for low-rep sets, hypertrophy work at 65% to 80%, and warm-ups below 50%. Never attempt a true max without proper warm-up, spotters, and technique coaching — especially if you are new to barbell training or returning after time off.
Different lifts produce different 1RM numbers — your squat max exceeds your overhead press. Calculate each lift separately rather than assuming one number transfers across movements. Daily readiness from sleep, nutrition, and stress changes what you can lift; 1RM is a snapshot for programming math, not a permanent badge of rank or health status.
CDC recommends muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups on two or more days per week for adults. Percentage-based loading helps you stay within productive intensity without testing true max every session. Pair estimated 1RM with autoregulation — adjusting load when sleep or joint soreness is off — rather than rigidly chasing percentages on bad days. Deload weeks at 60 to 70% of estimated max can help manage accumulated fatigue across a training block.
Worked example with defaults: 225 lb for 5 reps. Epley 1RM equals 225 times (1 plus 5/30), or 225 times 1.1667, approximately 262.5 lb. Brzycki gives a similar reference nearby. Programming at 90% would suggest working sets around 236 lb. Dropping to 3 reps at the same weight would raise the Epley estimate further, showing how rep count drives the projection.

Common questions
How many reps should I use?
Most accurate between 1 and 10 reps on a challenging set with good form. Sets above 10 reps underestimate true max because fatigue models differ from strength performance. A heavy triple or quintuple after warm-ups typically yields tighter estimates than a high-rep burnout set on isolation curls.
Is this medical advice?
No. 1RM estimates are for training planning and education. They cannot assess cardiac risk during heavy lifts or diagnose injury. Consult a qualified coach or clinician before maximal lifting, especially with prior joint surgery, hernia history, or cardiovascular risk factors your provider has flagged.
Epley vs Brzycki — which is better?
Both are estimates derived from different regression curves on gym populations. Epley is the headline result here; Brzycki is shown for comparison. If they diverge widely at your rep count, the set may be too high-rep for reliable prediction — retest with a heavier weight for fewer reps. Neither formula accounts for lift type, limb length, or tempo.
Should I test my real 1RM?
Only with proper warm-up, spotters, safety equipment, and experience. Submaximal estimation is safer for most recreational lifters. Competitors may test true max on meet day with judges present. Beginners should prioritize technique months before any max attempt on squats, bench, or deadlift. True max tests also require adequate sleep and nutrition in the days before.
Does this work for dumbbells and machines?
The formulas apply to any external load, but stability and skill differ by equipment. Barbell squat 1RM estimates do not transfer to leg press or Smith machine numbers. Calculate separately per exercise and per implement when building percentage-based programs.
