Researchers and media often group people into generational cohorts — Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, Gen Alpha — using birth-year bands. Pew Research Center publishes widely cited ranges; other organizations shift boundaries by a few years.
These labels describe population trends in surveys and headlines, not individual personality. Someone born in 1996 may identify with either Millennial or Gen Z culture depending on context. This calculator returns Pew-style approximate ranges for birth years 1928–2025.
Example: birth year 1990 → Millennial (1981–1996). Birth year 2005 → Gen Z (1997–2012). For exact age in years and months, use the age calculator instead.

Common questions
Why do different sites use different year cutoffs?
Generational boundaries are social constructs, not biological facts. Pew, Strauss–Howe, and marketing firms each publish slightly different ranges. This tool follows Pew Research Center cohort years.
What if I was born on a boundary year?
Cusp years (e.g., 1996 or 1997) are debated in pop culture. The calculator assigns one cohort per Pew ranges — treat it as a reference label, not identity.
Is this the same as counting family generations?
No. Social cohorts (Gen Z, Boomer) differ from genealogy "generations back" to ancestors. Use the family relationship or ancestor count calculators for kinship math.
