Counting direct ancestors

In a simplified family tree, each person has two biological parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents — doubling each generation back. The total number of direct ancestors through n generations (parents through nth-great-grandparents) is 2^(n+1) − 2.

Real genealogy rarely forms a perfect binary tree. Pedigree collapse happens when cousins marry or lines reconverge, so the same ancestor appears on multiple branches. This calculator assumes all ancestors are distinct — a theoretical upper bound, not a census.

Example: 3 generations back → 2⁴ − 2 = 14 ancestors (2 parents + 4 grandparents + 8 great-grandparents). 10 generations → 2¹¹ − 2 = 2,046 distinct slots in a fully expanded tree.

Common questions

Why 2^(n+1) − 2?

Each generation adds 2^n new ancestors at that level. Summing parents through n generations gives 2 + 4 + 8 + … + 2^n = 2^(n+1) − 2 total direct ancestors.

Does this include aunts, uncles, and cousins?

No. Only direct lineal ancestors — parents, grandparents, great-grandparents. Collateral relatives need the family relationship calculator instead.

Why might my real tree have fewer unique people?

Pedigree collapse, adoption, and unknown parentage reduce unique counts. This tool shows the mathematical maximum before those real-world effects.
