Exact age calculation

Exact age counts full calendar years from birth date to a reference date, then the leftover months and days — not a decimal like 36.4 years unless you convert separately. Leap years and months with 28–31 days require walking the calendar month by month rather than dividing total days by 365.

Pick today as the reference for "how old am I right now," or any later date for historical questions: "How old was I on my wedding day?" or "Did I meet the minimum age on the event date?" Time of birth is ignored; only calendar dates matter.

Example: born March 15, 1990, referenced to July 30, 2026 → 36 years, 4 months, 15 days. If you need days until the next birthday, subtract today from the upcoming birthday using the date difference calculator.

Common mistakes include using timezone midnight differences for babies born late at night, counting age at hire using hire month only (many policies care about the day), and forgetting that Korean age or other cultural age systems differ from Western calendar age.

Korean age and other cultural systems differ — this page uses Western calendar age only, not East Asian age reckoning where everyone gains a year on New Year.

Infant age in weeks is common for pediatric visits — convert days from date difference if the doctor quotes "12 weeks" versus calendar months.

School enrollment cutoffs use age on September 1 in many US districts — set reference date to the cutoff when checking kindergarten eligibility.

Retirement account early withdrawal penalties reference age 59½ — calendar age tools help but half-year milestones need month-level checks.

Limits: custom UI handles date picking — this explainer describes the math. Does not validate legal age for contracts, alcohol, or voting; confirm statutes locally.

Common questions

Does this account for leap years?

Yes — February 29 and varying month lengths are handled in the calendar walk. Month counts follow real months, not fixed 30-day blocks.

Can I calculate age on a past date?

Set the reference date to any day after birth. Useful for eligibility on graduation, hire, or milestone anniversaries.

Why not just divide days by 365?

That shortcut drifts on leap years and uneven months. Calendar stepping matches how people state age in years, months, and days.

Does time of birth matter?

Not here — only dates count. Someone born at 11:59 PM and referenced the next calendar day is one day older in date-only math.
