How Easter dates are calculated
Western (Catholic and most Protestant) churches use the Gregorian calendar and the Meeus/Jones/Butcher computus to find Easter Sunday — the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21 (a fixed date, not the astronomical equinox).
Eastern Orthodox churches compute Easter from the Julian calendar and then convert to Gregorian civil dates, which is why Orthodox Easter often falls on a different Sunday — sometimes the same, sometimes one week or more apart.
Example: Easter 2026 falls on April 5 (Western) under this formula. Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter; Good Friday is two days before; Pentecost is 49 days after. Local parishes may publish slightly different liturgical calendars.
Common questions
Why are Western and Orthodox Easter different?
They use different calendar systems and equinox/moon rules in the computus. In some years both Easters coincide on the same Gregorian Sunday.
Does this include local diocesan changes?
