Cross-stitch fabric size
Cross-stitch fabric count is holes (or threads) per inch — 14-count Aida means 14 stitches per inch. Stitched area = stitch count ÷ fabric count. A 140 × 200 stitch design on 14-count fabric measures 10 × 14.3 inches before any border.
Add border margin on all sides for framing or matting — 3 inches is a common minimum so the hoop or frame does not clip the design. Total fabric = stitched size + 2 × border on each dimension. Buy the next size up if your shop sells precut fabric in standard dimensions.
Example: 280 × 350 stitches on 18-count linen → 15.6 × 19.4 inches stitched. With 3-inch borders, cut fabric at least 21.6 × 25.4 inches (round up to 22 × 26 or buy a fat quarter). Higher count = smaller finished size for the same stitch count.

What is fabric count?
Count is stitches per inch. 14-count Aida is beginner-friendly; 18-count and 28-count (over-two on linen) produce finer detail in a smaller finished size.
How much border should I leave?
At least 2–3 inches on each side for framing. Larger pieces or deep mats may need 4+ inches. Enter your planned margin in the border field.
