Yarn yardage estimates
Yarn needs depend on project area, stitch density, and yarn weight. Heavier yarns (worsted, bulky) cover more square inches per yard than lace or fingering — but stitch pattern matters too. This calculator uses approximate coverage factors by standard CYC yarn weight categories to estimate yardage from width and height in inches.
Always add a buffer for gauge swatches, joining new skeins, and mistakes — 10% is a common starting point; complex colorwork or lace may need 15–20%. Divide total yards by yards per skein (check your label; 220 yards is typical for a 100 g worsted skein) and round up.
Example: a 40 × 50 inch worsted-weight blanket ≈ 2,000 sq in. At ~1.3 yds/sq in coverage plus 10% buffer → about 2,860 yards — roughly 13 skeins at 220 yards each. Swatch and weigh a 4-inch square for a tighter estimate on your pattern and tension.
Common questions
How accurate is yardage by yarn weight?
Coverage factors are averages. Lace and cables use more yarn than plain stockinette or single crochet. Make a gauge swatch, rip it out, and measure the yarn used for the most reliable number.
What yarn weight should I select?
Match the weight on your pattern or ball band — lace (#0) through jumbo (#7). Worsted (#4) is the default for many blankets and scarves. When in doubt, choose the weight your pattern specifies.
