Celsius is used in most countries and in science. Fahrenheit is common in the United States for weather and oven temperatures. Water freezes at 0°C (32°F) and boils at 100°C (212°F) at standard atmospheric pressure.
Common questions
My European recipe says 180°C — what oven setting do I use in the US?
180°C is 356°F. Set your US oven to about 355–360°F for baking. Fan-assisted (“convection”) ovens often need 20°C (about 25°F) lower than a conventional recipe states — check your oven manual.
At what temperature do Celsius and Fahrenheit show the same number?
At -40 degrees: -40°C equals -40°F. That is the only point where both scales read the same value.
Is a fever the same in °C and °F?
No — the numbers differ. A typical adult fever threshold is about 38°C, which is 100.4°F. US thermometers often default to °F; travel thermometers may show °C.
Why does the US still use Fahrenheit for weather?
Historical convention and familiar round numbers on forecasts (e.g. “70°F” as a pleasant day). Scientific work in the US still uses Celsius or kelvin; Fahrenheit persists mainly in public weather and home cooking.
