Oven-to-air-fryer conversion
Air fryers are essentially small, powerful convection ovens — the compact chamber and fast air circulation cook food faster than a conventional oven at the same temperature. A widely used rule of thumb is to lower the oven temperature by 25°F and reduce the cooking time to about 80% of the original.
This is a starting-point conversion, not a guarantee — air fryer basket size, food thickness, and how much you crowd the basket all affect actual cooking time. Always check food for doneness early and use a food thermometer for meat and poultry rather than relying on time alone.
Example: a recipe calling for 400°F for 20 minutes in a conventional oven converts to about 375°F for 16 minutes in an air fryer (400 − 25 = 375; 20 × 0.8 = 16). Check for doneness a few minutes early the first time you try a new recipe.
Common questions
Why do air fryers cook faster than ovens?
Air fryers are compact convection ovens — a small chamber and strong fan circulate hot air closely around the food, transferring heat faster than a larger conventional oven cavity.
Is the −25°F, 80% time rule exact?
No — it is a widely used starting point. Actual results vary by air fryer model, basket size, and how crowded the basket is. Check food a few minutes early and adjust next time.
