Liters vs US gallons
Liters are the metric volume unit on fuel pumps, drink bottles, and aquarium labels worldwide. In the United States, liquid gallons still dominate gas stations, milk jugs, and many recipe notes. This converter uses the US liquid gallon: exactly 3.785411784 liters (defined as 231 cubic inches).
Worked example: a 60 L car fuel tank holds 60 ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ 15.85 US gallons. A common 5-gallon gas can is about 18.9 L — useful when mixing two-stroke fuel if the ratio chart is written in only one unit.
Important caveat: UK (imperial) gallons are larger — about 4.546 L each. Recipes, older British manuals, and some Commonwealth labels may mean imperial gallons. Always confirm which gallon you need before trusting a round “gallons” figure.
Round-trip sanity check: 20 L ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ 5.283 US gal; multiply back and you get 20 L. If you accidentally use the UK imperial gallon (4.54609 L), the same 20 L looks like 4.40 “gallons” — always label US vs imperial on fuel-can math.

No. This calculator uses US liquid gallons (3.785 L). A UK imperial gallon is larger — about 4.546 L. Fuel economy labels and recipes may use different gallon types depending on the country. Round-trip: 5 US gal × 3.785411784 = 18.927 L, not 22.73 L (imperial).
How many liters fit in a standard US gas can?
A common 5-gallon gas can holds about 18.9 liters. For two-stroke fuel mixes (e.g. 50:1), measure gasoline in one unit throughout — do not mix gallons and liters in the same ratio calculation.
My car lists fuel tank size in liters abroad — how does that compare to gallons?
Divide liters by 3.785 for US gallons. A 60 L tank holds about 15.9 US gal. US EPA fuel-economy figures use US gallons; European labels use liters per 100 km.
Do recipe “cups” convert cleanly to liters?
US customary cups (about 237 mL each) differ from metric cups (250 mL) used in some countries. For liquids, convert the stated cup volume to mL or liters first, then to gallons if needed. One US cup ≈ 0.237 L; four cups ≈ 0.95 L, not a full liter.
