US butter measurements

US butter is sold in 1-pound boxes of four sticks, each weighing 113 g (4 oz). Each stick equals ½ cup or 8 tablespoons, so all four measurement systems convert cleanly from that single reference point.

Butter sold outside the US (blocks, not sticks) does not follow this exact packaging, so cup and tablespoon measurements are still useful, but "sticks" may not apply — use the grams figure for the most portable measurement internationally.

Example: 1½ sticks of butter equals ¾ cup, 12 tablespoons, and about 170 g. If a European recipe lists 250 g of butter, that converts to about 2.2 sticks or roughly 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon.

Common questions

How much does one stick of butter weigh?

One US stick of butter weighs 113 g (4 oz) and equals ½ cup or 8 tablespoons.

Do other countries sell butter in sticks?

Most countries outside the US sell butter in blocks by weight (250 g or 500 g are common), not pre-marked sticks. Use the grams conversion for the most reliable comparison.
