Walking time

Walking time is distance divided by average walking speed. A typical adult pace on flat ground is about 3 mph (4.8 km/h), or roughly 20 minutes per mile. Terrain, fitness, stops, and weather change your actual pace.

City trip planning often uses 3 mph for “walkable” distances — a 1.5-mile errand is about 30 minutes one way. Hikers on trails may average 2–2.5 mph with elevation; power walkers may exceed 4 mph.

Example: 2.5 miles at 3 mph → 50 minutes. The same distance at 3.5 mph → about 43 minutes. Add buffer time for crosswalks, crowds, and rest stops on urban routes.

Common questions

Is 3 mph a good default?

Yes for flat urban walking. Adjust speed if you know your typical pace from a fitness tracker or timed walks.

Does this include stops?

No — it assumes steady walking. Add time for traffic lights, sightseeing, or steep hills.

Can I use kilometers?

Switch to Metric and enter distance in km with speed in km/h. The math is the same: time = distance ÷ speed.
