Trip Budget Splitter

An even trip split divides the total cost by the number of travelers. Per-person per-night divides again by nights — useful for comparing Airbnb vs hotel per-head costs.

This method assumes everyone pays the same share. If one person booked flights and another paid for lodging, settle itemized shares separately or use a bill-splitting app for unequal costs.

Example: a $3,200 group trip with 4 travelers over 5 nights costs $800 per person, or $160 per person per night. Add personal spending (souvenirs, solo meals) on top.

An even split is fair only when consumption is even, and lodging is usually where that breaks. A couple sharing one room and a solo traveller in another consume very different amounts of the lodging bill, so assign rooms to their occupants first, then split genuinely shared costs — the rental car, groceries, the boat trip — across everyone.

Settling is simpler than it looks: you do not need one transfer per pair. Work out each person's net position (what they paid minus what they owe), then have those in deficit pay those in surplus. A group of six rarely needs more than four or five transfers, and doing it this way avoids the tangle of everyone reimbursing everyone.

Keep a single shared record from day one rather than reconstructing receipts at the end. A shared note or spreadsheet with date, payer, amount, and who it covered takes seconds per entry and removes almost all the end-of-trip disagreement — which is usually about memory, not money.

Decide the treatment of alcohol, tips, and taxis before the trip rather than at the settlement. These are the categories where consumption diverges most sharply and where retrospective fairness arguments start. A simple rule agreed in advance (“drinks are personal, meals are shared”) costs nothing and prevents most of it.

If some spending happens in another currency, settle the whole trip in one currency using a single rate. Converting each expense at the rate of its own day introduces small differences that never reconcile, and card conversion fees on shared payments quietly shift a few percent onto whoever happened to be holding the card.

Track who paid upfront versus who owes reimbursement — splitting at the end is easier when one person holds receipts in a shared folder during the trip.
