Gratuity is a percentage of your bill paid to service workers on top of the check. The basic formula is tip amount = bill × (tip percent ÷ 100), and total with tip = bill + tip amount. When dining with others, divide the total evenly by the number of people to get per-person cost. This calculator runs those steps instantly from the bill, tip rate, and party size you enter.

In the United States, sit-down restaurant service commonly uses 18% as a floor, 20% for standard good service, and 22% or more when the experience was exceptional or the party was large and demanding. Counter service, coffee shops, and takeout often see lower percentages — sometimes a flat dollar amount instead. Delivery drivers typically receive more when weather is bad or the order was heavy. These are social norms, not legal requirements, and they vary by city and industry.

Whether to tip on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total is a frequent question. Many diners mentally calculate on food and drink before sales tax because tax is not a service the waitstaff provided. Others tip on the full amount printed on the receipt because that is what they pay. This tool applies your percentage to whatever bill figure you type — if you want pre-tax tipping, enter the subtotal before tax rather than the grand total.

Worked example with the default fields: an $85 bill at 20% tip produces $85 × 0.20 = $17.00 in gratuity. Add that to the bill for a $102.00 total. With two people splitting evenly, each person pays $102 ÷ 2 = $51.00 — that includes both food share and tip share. The breakdown also shows tip per person ($8.50) so you can see how much of each diner’s payment is gratuity versus food.

Splitting evenly assumes everyone ordered roughly the same value. Birthday dinners where one person had steak and another had salad, or groups where some drank alcohol and others did not, often need itemized splits instead. Calculate each person’s subtotal plus their share of tax and tip separately, or use a bill-splitting app that accepts line items. This calculator is best when the group agrees to divide the final check equally.

Common mistakes include forgetting to adjust party size after someone leaves early, tipping twice because both diners mentally add 20%, and confusing pre-tax versus post-tax amounts when the receipt shows both. Another error is applying US percentages in countries where service is included in menu prices — in Japan, for example, tipping can be unusual or even awkward. Always match local custom when traveling.

Tip jars and counter-service screens often suggest three preset buttons — 15%, 18%, 20% — which map directly to the tip percent field. Coffee shop defaults differ from fine dining; adjust down for takeout where less table service occurred.

Rounding for cash tips: some diners round the total to the nearest dollar after calculating 20% — $102.37 becomes $103 on the card. Others tip on pre-tax and round the gratuity itself ($17 even on $85). Either approach is personal preference; this calculator shows cents-accurate math so you can adjust.

Limits: this is a math helper only. It does not look up suggested tip amounts, enforce minimum wage tip credit rules, or account for automatic gratuity for large parties that some restaurants add to the check. Auto-gratuity may already appear as a line item — do not double-tip unless you intend an extra thank-you. Cash tips may not appear on card receipts; the calculator does not track what was already left on the table.
