UTC offset conversion

Time zones are offsets from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). To convert, add the difference between destination and source offsets to your local clock. Moving from UTC−5 to UTC+1 adds six hours: 9:00 AM becomes 3:00 PM. Negative offsets are west of the prime meridian; positive offsets are east.

This converter uses fixed offsets only — it does not apply daylight saving transitions automatically. US Pacific might be UTC−8 in winter and UTC−7 in summer; European zones shift similarly. Before a spring or fall meeting, confirm which offset is in effect on that calendar date.

Example: 2:00 PM at UTC−8 (Pacific standard) equals 10:00 PM UTC and 11:00 PM at UTC+1 (Central European standard). Remote teams often anchor on UTC in invites ("14:00 UTC") to avoid ambiguity — convert from UTC as the source if your invite uses Zulu time.

Common mistakes include forgetting that date lines cross when adding hours (11 PM plus 3 hours can become the next calendar day), mixing up sign when converting "their time to my time" versus the reverse, and assuming GMT differs from UTC for scheduling (they match for practical purposes).

Calendar apps with city names handle DST automatically — use those for recurring meetings; this offset tool suits quick mental math when you already know both offsets.

India Standard Time (UTC+5:30) and Nepal (UTC+5:45) use half-hour and quarter-hour offsets — enter them explicitly; whole-hour defaults miss those regions.

Limits: no IANA time zone database, no historical rule changes, no half-hour or quarter-hour odd zones beyond what you enter. Use official government or airline tools for legal timestamp proof.

Common questions

Why doesn't this handle daylight saving?

DST start/end dates differ globally. Enter the offset actually in force on your meeting date, or confirm with a DST-aware calendar.

What is the difference between UTC and GMT?

For scheduling they are equivalent. UTC is the modern standard; GMT is the traditional name — offsets match in everyday use.

How do I convert meeting time to my zone?

Enter your current offset as source and the other participant's offset as destination, then type their proposed time.

Can times cross midnight?

Yes — large positive offsets can push the result into the next calendar day. Check the date as well as the clock.
