Even race splits

Even splits mean each segment of the race takes the same time — the most common pacing plan for distance races. Divide total time by the number of splits to get per-segment pace, then accumulate for checkpoint times.

Many runners aim for slight negative splits (second half faster) in practice, but even splits are the simplest baseline. Wind, crowds, and aid stations add seconds — use splits as guides, not rigid targets.

Enter race distance in kilometers, target finish time in minutes, and how many equal splits you want. The calculator shows cumulative clock time at each checkpoint distance.

Worked example with defaults: 10 km in 50 minutes with 5 splits → each 2 km segment takes 10 minutes. Checkpoints at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 km should read 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minutes on your watch.

For a half marathon (21.1 km) in 1:45 (105 min) with 4 splits of ~5.3 km each, each split is about 26:15. Adjust split count to match course markers — many races mark every kilometer.

Negative splits: run the second half slightly under each even-split checkpoint. If even 10K splits are 10:00 per 2 km, aim for 9:55 on splits 4 and 5 while holding 10:05 early.

Marathon pacing often uses 5 km or 5 mile markers — enter 42.195 km and 8 or 9 splits to match major road race signage. Write split times on a wristband or tape them to a gel flask so you can glance at checkpoints without doing math mid-race.

Half-marathon and marathon runners often print splits for the second half only when aiming for negative splits — run the calculator twice with the same total time but fewer splits in the first half estimate if you plan to start conservatively.

Limits: assumes flat, even effort. Courses with major elevation change need effort-based pacing (heart rate or RPE), not identical clock splits every segment.

Can I use miles instead of kilometers?
