How much dry rice per person
Uncooked rice portions typically run 60–75 g (about 2–2½ oz) per person as a side dish, or 85–100 g when rice is the main starch. Dry rice roughly triples in volume when cooked, so a modest handful of dry grains becomes a full serving after steaming or boiling.
Long-grain white rice, jasmine, and basmati behave similarly by weight, but brown rice and wild rice may feel heavier per cup because of bran and longer cook times. Weighing dry rice on a scale is more reliable than measuring cups — scoop density varies with how tightly the grains pack.
Example: for 8 guests at 75 g per person (a common side-dish default), you need 600 g of dry rice total — about 21 oz or roughly 3¼ US cups of uncooked long-grain white rice.

Common questions
How much dry rice is one serving?
About 60–75 g (2–2½ oz) works as a side portion; 85–100 g suits rice bowls or when rice is the main starch. Adjust up for big appetites or when rice is the only carb on the plate.
Does this estimate cooked or dry rice?
Dry (uncooked) weight — what you measure before cooking. Cooked rice weighs roughly three times as much after absorbing water.
Do all rice types use the same weight per serving?
Grams per person are similar across common white and brown rices. Very sticky or short-grain varieties may look like a smaller volume per gram — weighing dry rice removes that guesswork.
