Relationship duration is calendar time from a start date (first date, commitment, marriage, or any milestone you choose) to an end date — usually today. The result breaks into full years, remaining months, and remaining days by walking the calendar, not by dividing total days by 365.

Leap years and varying month lengths are handled automatically. February 29 start dates roll through valid calendar days each year. The end date must be on or after the start date — swap or correct inputs if you accidentally reversed them.

Which start date you pick is a relationship decision, not a math one. Some couples count from the first date; others from exclusivity, engagement, or wedding. The calculator does not judge — it measures the span you define.

Change the end date to measure a past chapter instead of an ongoing relationship. Set end to a separation date to see how long the relationship lasted in years, months, and days without implying judgment about the breakup. Default end date in the form is a fixed calendar day — change it to today when you want a live "how long we have been together" answer.

Total days elapsed differs from the y/m/d breakdown: 365-day shortcuts ignore month boundaries. This tool mirrors how people speak — "six years, four months" — rather than reporting "2,331 days" alone. Both views can be useful for paperwork versus conversation.

Anniversary countdown looks forward to the next recurring date; duration looks backward at elapsed time since a fixed start. Use countdown for planning cake; use duration for "together since" bios and milestone posts. Social media "anniversaries" in apps sometimes round to nearest month — this tool keeps exact calendar months and days without rounding up for display.

Paperwork that asks "length of relationship" may want total months or years only — export the y/m/d breakdown and convert if a form rejects day-level precision. Legal separation dates may differ from emotional ones; pick the end date that matches the question you are answering.

Worked example with default start March 20, 2020 and end August 7, 2026: you have been together 6 years, 4 months, and 18 days. That spans part of a leap year and varying month lengths — the calculator resolves each month boundary without manual counting. The anniversary countdown from a wedding on March 20 would show days until the next March 20, not the elapsed total shown here.
