Seed packets and transplant labels list recommended spacing between plants and sometimes different spacing between rows. This calculator estimates how many plants fit in a rectangular bed using one on-center spacing value for both length and width — a square grid pattern that is easy to plan with stakes and string.

On-center spacing means measuring from the center of one plant to the center of the next, not edge to edge. A 12-inch spacing for tomatoes assumes each plant occupies a 12×12 inch cell in the grid. Actual mature spread may exceed that cell — the packet spacing already accounts for airflow and harvest access.

Staggered or offset rows often squeeze a few extra plants into the same area compared with a strict square grid. Vining crops, trellised beans, and wide squash may need packet-specific spacing this tool cannot model. Root crops in rows sometimes use tighter in-row spacing with wider between-row paths.

Subtract walkway strips from bed dimensions before entering length and width. A 10 ft × 4 ft bed with a 1 ft path down the center is really two 4.5 ft × 4 ft planting zones, not one full rectangle. Paths improve harvest access and reduce soil compaction from foot traffic.

The result floors partial slots — if 120 inches divided by 12-inch spacing yields exactly 10 plants along the length, there is no half-plant at the edge. Border plants sit half a spacing from the bed edge in real layouts; this estimate is a planning upper bound, not a planting diagram.

Dense spacing increases yield per square foot but raises disease pressure and competition for water. Loose spacing improves airflow and size per head for lettuce or cabbage at the cost of total count. Use the calculator to compare scenarios before you buy transplants or seed packets.

Vertical trellises change the game — cucumbers and pole beans use horizontal row spacing on the ground but climb upward, so ground square footage understates capacity. This calculator counts flat footprints only; trellised crops may need fewer square feet than a bush variety at the same spacing label.

Worked example with default inputs: a 10 ft × 4 ft bed (40 sq ft) with 12-inch spacing fits a 10 × 4 grid — about 40 plants. That might suit bush beans or compact lettuce at packet spacing. Adjust spacing to 18 inches and the same bed drops to roughly 21 plants, illustrating how an extra 6 inches per plant nearly halves the count.

Common questions

Row spacing vs plant spacing?

This uses one spacing value for both directions. If your packet lists different row and plant spacing, run two calculations or use the larger value to avoid overcrowding.

Does this account for paths?

No. Subtract walkway strips from bed dimensions before entering length and width, or calculate each planting zone separately.

Why is my actual count different?

Offset rows, triangular layouts, and edge margins change real counts. This tool gives a square-grid estimate for quick seed and transplant shopping — verify against your seed packet diagram.
