Plant spacing grid
Seed packets list recommended spacing between plants and between rows. This calculator estimates a rectangular grid: plants along length × plants along width using on-center spacing.
Staggered (offset) rows often fit more plants than a strict square grid — results here are a square-grid estimate. Root crops and vining plants need packet-specific spacing.
Example: 10 ft × 4 ft bed with 12 in spacing → about 40 plants in a 10 × 4 grid pattern (120 in ÷ 12 = 10 per side).
Common questions
Row spacing vs plant spacing?
This uses one spacing value for both directions. If your packet lists different row and plant spacing, run two calculations or use the larger value.
Does this account for paths?
No. Subtract walkway strips from bed dimensions before entering length and width.
