Raised bed volume
Raised beds and planter boxes need a known volume of soil mix. Volume = length × width × depth — same math as mulch, but typically deeper (6–24 in or 15–60 cm) for root space.
Soil settles after watering — buy 5–10% extra for topping off. Blend topsoil, compost, and aeration (perlite, coco coir) per your crop needs.
Example: 8 ft × 4 ft × 12 in deep → 32 cu ft ≈ 1.19 yd³ of mix. Metric: 2.4 m × 1.2 m × 30 cm ≈ 0.86 m³.
Common questions
How deep should a raised bed be?
Vegetables often need 8–12 in (20–30 cm) minimum; carrots and potatoes may need more. Herbs can work in 6 in.
