Scaling patterns
Pattern scaling multiplies every measurement by the same factor so proportions stay the same. To scale a pattern from 100% to 110%, multiply each dimension by 1.10. Scaling on a home printer uses the print dialog percentage — verify a known reference square after printing.
Grading between sizes is more complex than uniform scaling — different body areas change at different rates. Use uniform scale for dolls, pets, or quick mock-ups; use a multi-size pattern or sloper for wearable grading.
The scale field accepts any positive percentage. Below 100% shrinks; above 100% enlarges. A 104% scale on a 24-inch hip line adds 4% to every dimension, not just width.
Worked example with defaults: original dimension 24 inches at 110% scale → 24 × 1.10 = 26.4 inches. The change column shows +2.4 inches (+10%). At 85% scale, a 10 cm square becomes 8.5 cm.
PDF pattern users should print a test page with a 1-inch or 5 cm square marked on the pattern. Measure the printed square and adjust the print percentage until it matches — then scale the whole file or individual pieces consistently.
Uniform scaling preserves shape but not always fit. Human bodies do not grow proportionally from size 8 to size 18 — bust, waist, and hip grade at different increments in professional pattern making.
Doll and pet clothes often use 50–75% scale of human patterns — enter the percentage directly. Always re-check head opening and limb length after scaling; neck and arm proportions do not always shrink linearly with body height.
Limits: this calculator scales one dimension at a time. For full garments, apply the same percentage to every measurement. It does not adjust seam allowance, grain lines, or notch positions separately.
Common questions
Can I scale only one dimension?
This tool scales uniformly. Stretching one dimension only changes proportions — that is pattern alteration, not scaling.
How do I scale a PDF pattern?
Print at the desired percentage in your PDF viewer, or measure a test square and adjust until it matches the pattern's stated size.
What scale do I use to go up one ready-to-wear size?
Ready-to-wear sizes are not uniform percentages — do not guess a single scale factor. Use the pattern's multi-size lines or a sloper. Uniform scaling is approximate at best for wearables.
