Fabric yardage
Fabric is sold by the running length (yard or meter) across the full width of the bolt. Total yardage equals the sum of all piece lengths you need, plus extra for shrinkage, pattern matching, and mistakes — typically 10–15% for garments, more for plaids.
Square area (yardage × width) helps compare different bolt widths. A 2-yard cut from 45-inch-wide fabric covers less area than 2 yards from 60-inch-wide fabric.
Example: you need 108 inches (3 yards) of 44-inch-wide cotton for a skirt. That is 3 yards by 44 inches — about 13.2 sq ft or 1.23 m² of fabric.
Common questions
Should I add extra for shrinkage?
Pre-wash fabric if your pattern recommends it, then add 10–15% to the calculated length for safety — more for nap, stripes, or large prints that must match.
What is a typical fabric width?
Quilting cotton is often 42–44 inches (107–112 cm). Apparel bolts may be 54–60 inches (137–152 cm). Check your pattern or bolt label.
