New moon is not the same as a solar eclipse. Eclipses require the new moon to cross the ecliptic plane so the moon’s shadow falls on Earth. Most new moons pass above or below the sun with no eclipse visible anywhere. Eclipse calendars add extra geometry this simple countdown does not model.

Worked example with default start date August 7, 2026: the next new moon arrives August 12, 2026 — 5 calendar days later. Starting from last quarter in early August, that short wait matches the final waning crescent slice of the cycle before illumination resets near zero.
