When is Lunar New Year?
Lunar New Year — also called Spring Festival in many communities — begins on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. On the Gregorian calendar it usually falls between January 21 and February 20.
This calculator returns the first day of the lunar year for a chosen Gregorian year using a fixed lookup table for 1990–2030. It does not compute every historical year or every East Asian calendar variant — Vietnam, Korea, and other regions may share the date or differ slightly in festival names.
Example: Lunar New Year 2026 is February 17, 2026. Anyone born before that date in 2026 still counts as the prior zodiac year in the animal calculator above.

Is this the same as Tết or Seollal?
Often the same Gregorian date, but holiday names and customs differ. Vietnamese Tết and Korean Seollal are related lunisolar holidays — verify locally for official public holidays.
Why does the date jump around in January and February?
Lunar New Year tracks the moon and intercalary months in the Chinese calendar. The Gregorian date shifts because lunar months do not align with solar years.
