Hair color mixing ratios
Hair color and lightener are mixed with developer (peroxide) at ratios printed on the product label — commonly 1:1, 1:1.5, or 1:2 (color to developer). The first number is color; the second is developer. At 1:1.5 with 60 g of color, developer = 60 × 1.5 = 90 g and total bowl weight = 150 g. Ratios are by weight (grams), not volume, unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.
Different lines and levels use different ratios. Permanent color often mixes 1:1; high-lift or certain blonding powders may use 1:2 for more lift and liquidity. Developer volume (10, 20, 30, 40 vol) controls lift and deposit — this calculator does the weight math only. Always follow the brand instructions for the specific shade, developer strength, and processing time.
Weigh color and developer on a scale for consistency. “Squirt” measuring drifts over time, wastes product, and makes salon pricing estimates unreliable. Zero the scale with an empty bowl, tare after color, then add developer to the target grams. Record typical bowl weights per service type so your product cost line in the pricing calculator stays accurate.
Worked example with defaults: 60 g color at a 1:1.5 ratio → developer = 60 × 1.5 = 90 g, total bowl = 150 g. If you need two bowls for long hair, run the calculation twice or double the color input — do not split one bowl across two clients. Mixed product has a limited working time; mix only what the application requires.
Ratios like 1:2.5 appear on some lightener systems where extra developer improves spreadability on dense hair. Select the ratio that matches your technical guide, not a rule of thumb from a different brand. When converting from ounces, multiply by 28.35 to get grams before entering color amount. Write the ratio on your mix ticket every time — guessing 1:1 versus 1:1.5 changes lift and deposit even when the color weight stays at 60 g.
