Example: newborn band at 10/day × 365 days ≈ 3,650 diapers per year — about 27 standard boxes of 140. Infant band at 8/day ≈ 2,920 diapers (~21 boxes).

A full year at the newborn rate overstates real use, because consumption falls as the baby grows. A more realistic first year is roughly 10 per day for the first two months, 8 or 9 through six months, and 6 or 7 thereafter — which lands nearer 2,600 to 2,800 diapers than the 3,650 a flat newborn rate suggests.

Sizing matters more than total count when you are buying ahead. Babies typically spend only a few weeks in newborn size and often skip it entirely if large at birth, then move through size 1 and 2 within months. Most of the first year's volume is in sizes 2 and 3, so heavy stockpiling of the smallest sizes is the classic mistake.

Wet and soiled changes follow different curves. Newborns often pass stool several times a day, especially when breastfed, and that frequency drops sharply after the first couple of months while urine output stays steady — which is why total changes fall even though feeding volume rises.

Box counts are approximate because pack sizes vary by brand, size, and format. Larger sizes contain fewer diapers per box at similar price points, so cost per diaper tends to rise as the baby grows even when the box price looks unchanged. Compare unit price rather than box price when planning a subscription.

Cloth users should read this as a laundry estimate instead. A cloth rotation typically needs about 24 to 36 diapers for a newborn to allow for wash cycles every two to three days, so the relevant number is changes per day multiplied by days between washes, plus a buffer for drying time.

Heavy wetters or long sleep stretches may need a higher buffer than the age-band average.

Premature or low-birth-weight babies may use smaller sizes longer — adjust age band downward if your pediatrician recommends.
