A pregnancy countdown counts whole calendar days between today (or any “as of” date) and your estimated due date. It helps with planning milestones — anatomy scan windows, maternity leave paperwork, and nursery prep — without replacing clinical scheduling.

Once the due date passes, the countdown shows zero rather than negative days. Only about 5% of births occur on the EDD itself; “full term” spans several weeks before and after.

A countdown to a single date can mislead, because birth timing is a distribution rather than an appointment. Roughly a third of births happen in the week either side of the estimated date, most within two weeks, and a first pregnancy tends to run slightly longer than later ones. Plan for a window of a few weeks rather than a deadline.

The most useful thing to do with the remaining days is convert them into working days. 128 calendar days is about 18 weeks, but only around 90 working days — and that is the number that matters for handover documents, project deadlines, and anything that has to be finished before leave starts.

Paperwork deadlines are usually the binding constraint rather than the birth itself. In the US, employers covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act generally require 30 days' advance notice of foreseeable leave, and short-term disability or state paid-leave programmes have their own filing windows. Work backwards from the due date and diarise those dates now.

Practical preparation clusters earlier than most first-time parents expect. Car seat installation and checking, hospital bag, pediatrician selection, and any nursery work involving paint or new furniture are worth completing by around 36 weeks, since roughly one in ten births in the US occurs preterm.

Update the date if your provider revises it. Early ultrasound sometimes shifts dating by several days, and every downstream milestone moves with it — this countdown simply measures whole calendar days to whatever date you enter, and is planning math rather than medical advice.

Trimester boundaries use the same LMP-based counting — first trimester ends around 13 weeks, second around 27 weeks. Your prenatal visits may follow a slightly different schedule from your clinic.

Multiples often deliver before 40 weeks — singleton LMP dating assumptions may not match twin or triplet timelines from your MFM specialist.
