Christmas Garland Calculator

Garland rarely runs in a straight line — swags on a mantel, loops on a stair banister, and sag on a porch railing all need extra length beyond the raw measurement. A drape factor of 1.5× is a common starting point for moderate swag; 2× suits dramatic dips.

Stair mode multiplies step count by tread depth (run) to get the diagonal path length before drape. Measure one tread depth and count steps along the garland path, not necessarily every step in the house if the garland stops mid-flight.

Mantel and railing modes start from your measured span in inches — mantel face width or railing run — then apply the drape factor. Measure the full span including returns around side pillars if the garland continues beyond the front face.

Wreath mode estimates diameter from door width — roughly 65% of door width for a proportional wreath on standard entry doors. Adjust visually if you prefer oversized statement wreaths or tight minimalist circles.

Example: 13 steps with 10-inch treads and 1.5× drape gives about 16.25 ft of garland before ties and tucking at the newel post. Buy one extra garland segment if your banister has spirals or mid-rail breaks.

Fresh greenery shrinks slightly as it dries — artificial garland lengths stay fixed. For live garland outdoors, wind and weight may need additional wire or zip ties not reflected in length math.
