How many candies fit in the jar
Guessing-game jars are rarely perfect spheres of identical cylinders — this calculator divides effective jar volume (cubic inches) by the volume of one candy piece, scaled by a packing fraction between 0 and 1 to account for air gaps between irregular shapes.
Random mixed candy packs use an average piece volume — measure one representative piece with calipers or water displacement for better accuracy. Spherical gumballs pack tighter than twisted wrappers.
Example: a 500 cu in jar at 60% packing with 0.5 cu in per piece yields about 600 pieces, with a displayed band near 540–660 for contest answer ranges.
Fill the jar the same way guests will see it — shaking settles pieces and raises count versus loose drop-in. Leave headspace below the lid rim if the rules say "no overflow."
For fundraisers, pick a single candy type so variance is lower. Mixed minis need conservative packing fractions (0.55–0.65).
Convert jar dimensions to cubic inches separately if you only know cup capacity — 1 US cup ≈ 14.44 cu in.

Common questions
What packing fraction should I use?
0.6 is a reasonable default for mixed small hard candies in a glass jar. Use 0.64–0.68 for uniform spheres; lower for airy or irregular shapes.
How do I measure one candy volume?
Water displacement in a narrow cup works: submerge one piece, read mL displaced, convert to cubic inches (1 mL ≈ 0.061 cu in).
Why is there a low–high range?
Real jars have neck taper, label ridges, and settling — the ±10% band brackets the floor estimate for fair guessing-game answers.
