Tropical sun signs
Western astrology assigns a sun sign based on where the Sun appeared along the ecliptic on your birth date. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac — the familiar Aries-through-Pisces calendar used in most horoscope columns and birth-chart apps.
Each sign belongs to one of four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and one of three modalities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable). Elements describe broad temperament themes; modalities describe how a sign initiates, stabilizes, or adapts. These are symbolic labels, not personality tests.
Birth dates on sign boundaries are sometimes called cusps. Most astrologers assign a single sign based on the exact cutoff for your year — this tool flags boundary dates as a reminder. Example: March 21 typically begins Aries season; July 23 often starts Leo.
Common questions
Does my exact birth time matter for my sun sign?
Usually no — the sun sign depends on the calendar date. Very rarely, someone born near midnight on a cusp may fall on the previous or next sign depending on the year and time zone. Moon and rising signs need birth time and place.
Is this the same as my Chinese zodiac sign?
No. This tool uses the Western tropical zodiac by birth date. Chinese zodiac follows lunar New Year cycles and a 12-animal system — see our cultural calculators for that tradition.
