Viewing distance depends on screen size, resolution, and personal comfort. THX-style guidance often suggests sitting roughly 1.2× to 2.5× the screen diagonal away — closer for immersive 4K, farther if you prefer a cinema-like field of view.
This calculator uses diagonal inches × multipliers for minimum, ideal (~1.6×), and maximum distances. Ultra-short-throw projectors and wall mounts change geometry — measure eye position to screen center, not couch to wall.
Example: a 65″ TV → minimum about 6.5 ft, ideal about 8.7 ft, maximum about 13.5 ft. A 55″ set scales proportionally — ideal near 7.3 ft. Room layout and seating height still matter for neck comfort.
Common questions
Does 4K let me sit closer?
Higher resolution reduces visible pixel structure at closer distances. Many 4K owners sit nearer the minimum end of the range; 1080p may look softer if you sit too close.
Is THX distance mandatory?
No — it is a comfort guideline. Sports fans may prefer wider angles; cinematic viewing often favors the middle of the range.
Do I measure the TV bezel?
Use the advertised screen diagonal (active picture area). Stands and bezels do not change the optical distance calculation much.
