Shopify Payments online rates (US)
Shopify merchants pay in two layers: the monthly plan subscription and per-order payment processing. When you use Shopify Payments — Shopify’s built-in processor powered by Stripe infrastructure in many regions — you pay a card rate on each sale and no additional Shopify transaction percentage. US online defaults are typically 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. Premium or corporate cards and international cards add about +1% on top of those base rates.
If you route checkout through a third-party gateway — PayPal, Authorize.net, or another external processor — Shopify adds its own transaction fee on each order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, or 0.6% on Advanced, stacked on whatever the gateway charges. That double stack is why most US stores activate Shopify Payments when eligible: a $100 Basic-plan order at 2.9% + $0.30 costs $3.20; the same order through a third-party gateway at 2.9% + $0.30 plus Shopify’s 2% surcharge costs $5.20 — $2.00 more per order.
Monthly plan cost ($39 Basic, $105 Grow, $399 Advanced at common monthly billing) is not per-order but it is real overhead. Amortize it: if Basic costs $39 and you do 390 orders/month, that is $0.10 per order before processing. This calculator isolates per-order processing so you can compare plan tiers and gateway choices without blending subscription accounting into a single SKU margin sheet.
Shopify Plus merchants negotiate custom processing rates and may pay 0.15%–0.25% platform fees on some setups — far below standard plans. Shopify Markets, multi-currency payouts, and Shop Pay installments carry separate economics. In-person retail with Shopify POS uses different card-present rates than online checkout.
Worked example: $100 order on Grow with Shopify Payments → 2.7% + $0.30 = $3.00 fees, net $97.00 before product cost. Same $100 on Grow with external PayPal at 3.49% + $0.49 plus Shopify 1% → $3.98 gateway + $1.00 Shopify = $4.98 fees, net $95.02. The plan upgrade from Basic to Grow saves 0.2% on processing — on $50,000 monthly GMV that is $100/month before counting the higher subscription price.
Round-trip sanity check: processing fee + net payout should equal order total. If you forgot Shopify’s third-party surcharge, your net will look artificially high. Shopify Payments payouts arrive on a rolling schedule — timing differs from fee accrual but the percentages here match the order detail screen.
Apps, shipping labels, Shopify Email, tax filing add-ons, and chargebacks are excluded. Shopify updates US card rates and plan pricing — Calcometry is not affiliated with Shopify. Confirm numbers in Admin → Settings → Payments before launching a promotion that cuts margin to the bone.
Shop Pay installments and Shop Cash rewards affect buyer checkout but merchant processing rates follow your plan tier unless Shopify documents a promo. Multi-currency stores with Shopify Markets may settle in local currency with conversion on payout. POS in-person swipes use card-present rates — often lower percentage but different fixed fee than online 2.9% + $0.30 modeled here for ecommerce orders.
Capital and Shopify Balance products are financing, not per-order processing. Transaction fees on gift card sales follow the same card rate as physical goods. B2B wholesale channels on Shopify Plus may negotiate interchange-plus — Enterprise merchants should paste live rates from admin rather than these self-serve defaults.
Shopify Tax and duties automation may add subscription fees separate from card processing on each order. Duties charged at checkout increase the amount processed and therefore the card fee base when duties flow through Shopify Payments. Manual payment orders (cash, check) skip processing but still need margin math offline.

Common questions
Do I pay Shopify fees if I use PayPal instead of Shopify Payments?
Yes. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee on each order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, or 0.6% on Advanced — on top of whatever your gateway charges. You may pay both PayPal and Shopify on the same order.
Does this include my monthly Shopify subscription?
No. This calculator shows per-order payment processing (and optional third-party surcharge) only. Add your plan cost ($39/$105/$399 per month, or annual equivalents) separately when calculating monthly net profit.
What about premium or international cards?
Shopify charges higher rates for premium/business cards and international cards (+1%). This calculator uses standard domestic consumer card rates — toggle expectations upward if you sell globally or to corporate buyers.
