Pool water volume

Pool volume equals the water-filled cross-section area times average depth. Rectangular pools: length × width × depth. Round pools: π × radius² × depth. Results convert cubic feet to US gallons (× 7.48) and liters.

Use average depth if the shallow and deep ends differ — (shallow + deep) ÷ 2. This calculator assumes a single depth value and uniform walls; freeform pools need segmented rectangles or professional measurement.

Example: a 32 ft × 16 ft rectangle at 4 ft average depth holds 32 × 16 × 4 = 2,048 cu ft → about 15,320 gallons (58,000 liters). A 24 ft diameter round pool at 4 ft depth holds about 13,500 gallons.

US gallons equal cubic feet times about 7.48; litres equal cubic metres times 1,000. Chemical dosing charts usually list ounces or millilitres per 10,000 gallons, so divide your volume by 10,000 before reading the bottle — a 15,000-gallon pool needs 1.5× the chart dose for that size.

Average depth is the right input when the floor slopes. Measure shallow and deep ends and take the midpoint — (3 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.5 ft — rather than using the deep-end figure alone, which overstates volume and overdoses chemicals.

Kidney, freeform, and lagoon shapes need segmented rectangles or a professional measurement. This tool covers rectangle and round shells only; approximating a freeform pool as its bounding box overstates water volume.

Refill time is volume divided by hose flow in gallons per minute. A typical garden hose delivers 5–10 GPM, so a 15,000-gallon pool can take 25–50 hours of continuous fill — useful planning for well capacity and hose duty cycle.
