Stretching PTO around Christmas and New Year

Year-end holidays cluster public days off with weekends — smart PTO placement turns a few vacation days into a long break. This calculator scans a date window and finds the longest consecutive span you can cover with your PTO budget while skipping listed public holidays.

Weekdays that are not public holidays count as PTO when they fall inside your chosen break — Saturdays and Sundays are free but do not count against PTO in this model. Edit the holiday CSV for your country or employer calendar.

Default holidays 2026-12-25 and 2027-01-01 match common US federal observances — add Christmas Eve or regional boxes if your employer grants them without PTO.

Example: from 2026-12-20 through 2027-01-05 with 3 PTO days and those holidays may yield a multi-day stretch bridging Christmas and New Year when placed on adjacent weekdays — exact output depends on which days of the week fall in range.

Results show which PTO dates the optimizer picked — compare with your team's blackout rules before submitting requests. Longest break is not always the only goal if you prefer fewer partial work weeks.

Remote workers still benefit from calendar math — time zone and client coverage may constrain which PTO dates are practical even when the span is valid on paper.

Pair with the days-until-Christmas countdown when pitching dates to family travel plans. Advent start calculator helps liturgical planning separate from PTO math.

Common questions

Which days count as PTO?

Monday–Friday dates inside your break that are not listed public holidays. Weekends are free and do not consume PTO in this model.

How do I add my country's holidays?

Edit the public holidays field as comma-separated YYYY-MM-DD dates — e.g. add 2026-12-24 if your employer gives Christmas Eve off.

Is the longest break always best?

It maximizes consecutive days off for your PTO budget — compare with team coverage and personal preference before booking flights.
