Final exam formula
Course grades are often a weighted average of work completed before the final plus the final exam score. If the final is worth W (as a decimal) of the course, your current grade contributes (1 − W) of the total.
Required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − W)) ÷ W. Results above 100% or below 0% mean the target is not achievable (or already secured) with those inputs.
Example: 88% current grade, 30% final weight, 90% target needs exam = (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 ≈ 94.7%. You need about 95% on the final.
Exam weight decides how much the final can rescue or ruin a course, and the leverage is easy to underestimate. With a 20% final, a 90% target from an 88% standing needs about 98% on the exam; at 40% weight the same target needs only 93%. A heavily weighted final is dangerous but forgiving — a lightly weighted one cannot move much at all.
A required score above 100% means the target is arithmetically out of reach with these inputs, not that you should give up on the course. Recheck the exam weight against the syllabus, confirm your current standing in the gradebook, and ask whether any extra credit or dropped-lowest-score policy applies before treating the result as final.
A negative or near-zero requirement means the grade is already secured, which is worth knowing precisely. If you need 12% to keep an A, you can budget revision time toward a course where the final actually decides the outcome — but confirm your institution has no minimum-exam-score rule that can fail you regardless of the average.
The calculation assumes your current grade already reflects the syllabus category weights. If homework, quizzes, and midterms carry different percentages, use the weighted figure the gradebook shows rather than a raw average of scores, since averaging categories evenly can misstate your standing by several points.
Course grades also depend on how the final percentage becomes a letter. A 90% target is only meaningful against your syllabus cutoffs, and rounding rules differ: an 89.5% may be an A− in one course and a B+ in another. Check whether your instructor rounds at all before aiming at an exact boundary.
Extra credit can lower the required final below the calculated value — the formula assumes no extra credit beyond what is in your current grade.
Common questions
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
The target course grade is not reachable with the given current grade and exam weight. Lower the target or check whether extra credit exists.
Should I enter the final weight as percent or decimal?
Enter the exam weight as a percentage (e.g., 30 for 30%). The calculator converts internally.
How do exam weight and course grade interact?
Your current course average and the final exam weight determine the score you need. A heavily weighted final can require a high exam score even with a solid semester average — enter exact syllabus weights.
