Fresh-cut Christmas trees drink water through the trunk base — once the stand dries out, sap can seal the cut and the tree may stop absorbing water even after you refill. NC State Extension and other tree-care guides recommend checking water daily and never letting the level drop below the base.
A widely cited rule is roughly one US quart of water per day for each inch of stem diameter — a 4-inch trunk may use about 4 quarts (1 gallon) daily, especially during the first week indoors. Warm rooms and low humidity increase uptake; the calculator uses the standard linear estimate as a planning baseline.
Stand capacity determines how often you must refill — a 2-quart stand on a 4-inch trunk may need water every 12 hours under the baseline rate. Choose a stand that holds at least one gallon for typical living-room trees.
Example: 4-inch stem diameter → about 4 qt/day and roughly 12 hours between refills on a 2-quart stand. Scale stem diameter measurement at the cut face, not branch spread.
Skip additives — plain tap water is what extension services recommend. Preservatives and home recipes do not replace frequent refilling and a fresh cut before setup.
Place the tree away from heat vents, fireplaces, and sunny windows to slow drying. Turn off lights when unattended to reduce fire risk and heat near needles.

Where do I measure trunk diameter?
At the cut face where the trunk sits in the stand — not branch spread. Measure inches across the widest point of the trunk circle.
Is one quart per inch always exact?
It is a planning average from extension guidance. First-week use can be higher; warmer/drier rooms increase uptake. Check the stand daily regardless of the estimate.
What if the stand runs dry?
The cut may seal and the tree might not rehydrate fully. Make a fresh cut if possible and keep water above the base — prevention is easier than recovery.
