Print bleed
Trim size is the final cut dimension of a printed piece — the size of the business card or brochure after the guillotine. Bleed is extra artwork extending beyond the trim line on all four sides so minor cutter drift does not leave white hairlines at the edge. Printers ask for bleed in the PDF canvas, not as a margin inside your layout.
Final document dimensions add bleed twice per axis — once per side. Formula: final width = trim width + (2 × bleed), final height = trim height + (2 × bleed). Standard commercial bleed is 3 mm per edge (about ⅛ inch). Some newspaper and wide-format shops accept 2 mm; packaging and large format may request 5 mm. Always confirm the print spec sheet.
Bleed is not the same as safe margin (live area). Keep text and logos inside a safe zone inset from trim — often 5 mm on small formats — so nothing critical sits where the blade might wander. Background colors and full-bleed photos should extend through the bleed zone to the PDF edge.
Worked example with the default metric fields: trim 210 × 297 mm (A4) and 3 mm bleed per edge. Add 6 mm to each dimension: final size 216 × 303 mm. In inches that is about 8.50 × 11.93 in. The summary line restates trim plus bleed so you can paste dimensions into InDesign, Affinity, or Canva export settings.
Switch the unit toggle to US inches for business cards: trim 3.5 × 2 in with 0.125 in bleed yields 3.75 × 2.25 in export size. Metric and imperial modes convert internally — enter values in the units shown on each label after toggling.
Common mistakes include adding bleed to only one side, using margin settings instead of document canvas size, and exporting “crop marks” without actually extending artwork into the bleed area. Another error is setting bleed in the layout app but placing a white artboard background that stops at trim — the bleed zone must contain the same background color or image continuation.
Printers sometimes supply dielines for custom shapes — bleed still applies to the bounding box of the shape, not just rectangles. For saddle-stitched booklets, outer spreads need bleed on outside edges; inner gutter edges often omit bleed because they are bound, not cut individually.

Common questions
How much bleed do printers require?
3 mm (⅛ in) per edge is the most common spec. Some wide-format or newspaper workflows use 2 mm — confirm with your print shop before exporting.
Is bleed the same as margin?
No. Bleed extends outward beyond trim for cutting tolerance. Safe margin is inset from trim where you keep live text away from the cut line.
Do I add bleed to both width and height?
Yes — bleed applies to all four edges. The calculator adds 2× bleed to each trim dimension automatically.
Should inner booklet pages have bleed?
Outside edges of spreads need bleed. Gutter-facing edges bound into the spine usually do not — your printer’s imposition template defines which edges bleed.
