Print bleed
Bleed is extra artwork beyond the trim line so color and images run to the paper edge after cutting. Without bleed, slight cutter misalignment leaves white slivers. Standard commercial bleed is 3 mm (about ⅛ inch) per edge.
Final document size = trim width + 2× bleed by trim height + 2× bleed. A US business card trim 3.5 × 2 in with 0.125 in bleed needs a 3.75 × 2.25 in PDF.
Example: A4 trim 210 × 297 mm with 3 mm bleed → export 216 × 303 mm. Keep important text inside the safe margin (often 5 mm inside trim).
Common questions
How much bleed do printers require?
3 mm (⅛ in) per edge is the most common spec. Some wide-format or newspaper workflows use 2 mm — confirm with your print shop.
Is bleed the same as margin?
No. Bleed extends outward for cutting. Safe margin is inset from trim where you keep live text away from the cut line.
