Estimating baby shower food quantities

Baby shower menus are usually lighter than a full dinner — finger foods, mini sandwiches, fruit, and sweets — so planners often budget around 0.4–0.6 pounds of food per guest. Total pounds is guest count × pounds per guest, padded by a buffer percentage for seconds and last-minute plus-ones.

This calculator splits the total into roughly 45% entrees or mains, 35% sides and snacks, and 20% dessert — a useful split when ordering trays or building a buffet spread.

Example: 30 guests at 0.5 lb each with a 15% buffer needs about 17 lbs of food total — roughly 8 lbs of entrees, 6 lbs of sides, and 3 lbs of dessert. Round up with your caterer to the nearest tray size.

Common questions

How many pounds of food per guest should I plan?

For a mid-day shower with appetizers and light bites, 0.4–0.6 lb per guest is a common range. Add more if you're serving a full lunch or hot buffet.

Why add a buffer percentage?

Buffers cover extra helpings, uneven tray sizes, and guests who eat more than average — 10–20% is typical for casual buffet-style showers.
